DBM

Demineralised bone matrix (DBM) is cortical bone which has been cut, milled into fine particles and washed to remove soft tissues, cells and marrow elements. The bone has then been further processed by removing minerals to leave collagen matrix and endogenous bone growth factors such as bone morphogenic proteins (BMPs).

We recommend DBM when the surgeon requires osteoinduction but does not need structural properties from the graft. For example, DBM is excellent in situations such as small joint arthrodesis where a small joint space is grafted, or as a graft around a stable fracture.

Major advantages of DBM:

  • DBM can save you time
  • Using DBM reduces the preparation and anaesthetic time, and morbidity for the patient.
  • Shelf-life is 5 years at ambient temperature - an "off the shelf" solution to keep in stock

Examples of use of DBM

(a) (b) (c)

(a) Malunion of a central tarsal bone fracture in a Labrador; (b) Use of DBM for partial tarsal arthrodesis with a medial plate; (c) 6 week post-operative radiograph demonstrating union.

In some circumstances, the surgeon may wish to mix DBM with cancellous chips to provide osteoinduction and osteoconduction where a void exists (e.g. large joint arthrodesis, comminuted unreconstructed fracture, non-union fracture).
