Blocks and Dowels

Cancellous blocks can be used in any area where a large bone block is required as a load bearing or as a structural support. Examples of procedures where a cancellous block might be used are:

• spinal fusion (as intervertebral spacer)
• osteotomy (where there is a gap requiring support)

Description of a cancellous block: approximately 10x13x15 mm, hard and dense cancellous bone block. It has been processed to remove soft tissues, blood and marrow elements. Available as freeze dried, irradiation sterilized graft. Blocks may be nibbled with rongeurs to customize the shape for the required defect.

Cancellous dowels are similar composition to blocks but are cylindrical in shape. Examples of procedures where a cancellous dowel might be used are:

• spinal fusion (as intervertebral spacer)
• in treatment of incomplete ossification of the humeral condyle (IOHC); the dowel might be used to span the humeral condyle.
